Over 70% of the average households energy use goes into space (radiators) and water heating, so a free source hot water to use instead of conventional energy can make a big financial saving on fuel bills. Solar water heating is the renewable technology choice for a large percentage of homes in the U.K. as it offers a relatively short payback time. Typically 7-15 years for an average household and environmentally its ‘clean’ too. Solar water heating uses the radiation from the sun absorbed into a solar panel often on the roof.
Solar water heating
Within the panel is a copper heat transfer pipe containing heat transfer fluid. When the temperature in the properties hot water storage cylinder is lower than the stored heat in the panel the heat transfer fluid is then pumped into a secondary coil which heats up the stored water. In addition to the standard solar panel an ‘evacuated tube system’ is also an option. Rather than using the temperature of the sun the evacuated tubes draw their energy from the available light. This means they can perform better in colder conditions.
